Safer Spaces benefits
“The Thames Gateway represents outstanding potential for expanding housing supply close to London”
- Thames Gateway: Making it Happen. Office of the Deputy Prime Minister, 2003

With over 200,000 new homes planned for the area, a significant proportion of which will be ‘affordable’, Registered Social Landlords have an opportunity to make a real contribution to the future of Londoners.

Safer Spaces: offering creative solutions for community safety, will deliver Design and Technical services to Registered Social Landlords, and the communities they serve, to address perceived and actual safety issues on estates.

Safer Spaces will work with people to create spaces that they want to live and play in, making community spaces safer and more attractive. In doing so Safer Spaces will enable tenants and residents to assess their own safety needs, analysing the root causes of crime and anti-social behaviour, and encourage problem solving

The service will be offered in the following Thames Gateway Boroughs:

• Barking and Dagenham
• Hackney
• Havering
• Newham
• Redbridge
• Tower Hamlets
• Waltham Forest

Safer Spaces will provide high quality Design and Technical services to Registered Social Landlords, enabling them to deliver liveable spaces created by and for their tenants.

  • “The Free Form Arts Trust provides creative leadership to help improve amenities and landscapes in deprived inner-city areas across the UK. Its imaginative neighbourhood renewal projects have won many awards”.
    - The Urban Summit: Accelerating the renaissance in our towns and cities. 2002

Free Form Arts Trust has an established track record of working with residents to make environmental and design improvements to their estates. Free Form has pioneered participation techniques that enable community groups, usually excluded from the regeneration agenda to contribute to shaping their neighbourhoods.
