New Roots
Young Hackney Voices

Ty and the New Roots CD New Roots: Young Hackney Voices is a photography exhibition celebrating ‘photomonth’ and Black History Month.  The exhibition showcases the lyrical talent of young Hackney residents who have researched their roots through archive research at Hackney Archives and The National Archives ‘Moving Here project’.

The project was led by prolific local wordsmith Gemma Weekes aka MisFit.  Participants have also worked with poets Dorothea Smartt, Nolan Weekes and El Crisis in a series of workshops to create their own raps, poems and lyrics.

New Roots: Young Hackney Voices places Hackney on the map with all the hopes, dreams, fears, determination, anger, love, memories and a flavour of young people’s lives and Hackney’s diverse heritage influences with this explosion of lyrical talent.

The exhibition comprises specially commissioned works by photographer Rod Morris and photos by New Roots: Hackney Voices participants alongside workshop photography by Ned Dyke-Coomes. Alternative Arts commissioned photographers Rod Morris and Ned Dyke-Coomes on behalf of ‘photomonth’ to work with on this project coordinated by Free Form Arts Trust.

New Roots: Young Hackney Voices is supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund.
